Newly minted CNN 9 PM host Piers Morgan knows he is not a familiar journalistic face to American audiences. He also knows that the cable news landscape is full of big personalities and opinions. Morgan has no intention of aping the competition, or using his new platform to push a political agenda. "I have a lot of opinions, do I want to shove them down my viewer's throats? No, there are enough people doing that on cable news at 8 or 9 o'clock at the moment," Morgan says. "I don't want people to view me as a political animal, I...

The unemployment rate soared to a nearly five-year high in August as employers trimmed jobs for the eighth straight month, the government reported Friday. The unemployment rate rose to 6.1%, the highest level since September 2003. That's up from 5.7% in July and 4.7% a year ago. In addition, the economy suffered a net loss of 84,000 jobs in August, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, compared to a revised reading of a 60,000 job loss in July. The U.S. economy has lost 605,000 jobs so far this year. The jobs report immediately drew comment from the presidential candidates...

With pomp and panoply befitting a visit from a foreign dignitary, ABC raised the curtain on its newly revamped "This Week" program and introduced in a big way the superstar who's taken it over in a big, big way: Christiane Amanpour, veteran CNN foreign correspondent now uneasily relocated to a desk job. -snip- Perhaps in keeping with the newly globalized program, the commendable "In Memoriam" segment ended with a tribute not to American men and women who died in combat during the preceding week but rather, said Amanpour in her narration, in remembrance of "all of those who died in...

Last Sunday, this column accused much of the national TV news media of pandering to the bad guys, especially to Islamist radicals and Muslim mass-murderers to whom the M-word murder is never attached. Absurdly discreet, delicate phrasing and politely vague references, I wrote, replace words that speak cold facts. The very next morning, this past Monday, CNN presented an opportunity to judge for yourself: On Nov. 5, 2009, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a US Army psychiatrist stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas, went on a shooting rampage that left 13 murdered and 30 wounded. Hasan was shot and paralyzed.

There is something about CNN and the people writing chyrons for the alleged "most trusted name in news" with the "best political team on television." Last week, these geniuses clarified the White House's position on President Barack Obama's religion. However on CNN Aug. 28 coverage of Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally, which CNN reporters and anchors seemingly held their nose up and reported on throughout the event, the chyron on the screen was something likened to one of those parlor games where you circle the numerous errors involved. (h/t Inside Cable News) ...more...

(CNN) NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous, speaking at the "Reclaim the Dream" rally Saturday, castigated the message of the Glenn Beck rally across town in Washington. "For a year and a half, we've been subjected to small hearts and small minds on our small screens," he said, referring to conservative ideas on media. Beck is a conservative talk show host, with a program on Fox News as well as several radio programs.
